Following a very successful trip earlier this year, the story didn’t quite end when the Signs4Golf team rolled back onto the ferry. Ireland had one more chapter waiting – and this time it came with an unexpected encounter with golfing greatness.

First stop Donabate

On arriving in Dublin, we were ready to meet the wonderful team at The Island Golf Club in Donabate – one of Ireland’s oldest and most iconic links courses. Founded in 1890, the Club was once accessible only by boat – and is known for its status as a host venue for major amateur championships and Open Championship qualifiers.

The Club is also known for being set within towering sand dunes and the sea surrounding it on three sides, and, recent course enhancements by leading architects have refined its layout while preserving its natural beauty, making it a favourite among visiting golfers – including us!

True to Irish tradition, the day began the right way – with a hearty Irish breakfast. Over a cup of tea and great conversation with John Kelly, Gary Carty and Michelle O Neill, it was clear that this club shared the same values we celebrate at Signs4Golf: hospitality, pride, and community.

After breakfast, Gary showed us onto the course to capture photographs of the tee box signage, nearest-the-pin markers, longest drive signs and a special gift — the pitchfork sign. With sweeping views across the bay to Malahide, it was the perfect setting to showcase the signage and how it complements a course of this calibre.

A round to remember

Back at the pro shop, we were welcomed by David, the Head Professional, who couldn’t have been more helpful. He arranged hire clubs, a buggy and even offered a complimentary nine holes – and of course we jumped at the chance! The Island’s reputation for friendliness is well-earned.

Returning to the clubhouse, I was treated to a perfectly poured pint of Guinness and a warm chat with Nathan and the catering team. The food matched the scenery – excellent in every way.

Later, we checked into the Club’s lodge: a fantastic space featuring four en-suite beds and views stretching across the island. It was the kind of place you could happily stay for a weekend… or longer.

A final morning surprise!

On Tuesday morning, we prepared to say our goodbyes. But before leaving, the trip delivered one final, unforgettable moment.

A three-time major champion was in the clubhouse and we were lucky enough to get a photo with him. A perfect ending to an already incredible visit!

If our Signs4Golf road trip showcased the beauty of Ireland’s golf landscape, this visit to The Island Golf Club embodied its spirit. Warm welcomes, genuine hospitality, iconic scenery and a shared passion for the game – everything that makes Irish golf so special.

Gary was kind enough to give us the following words about our service:

“Our experience with Clive & the team at Signs4Golf has been exceptionally positive. From initial contact, the design process, right through to the hand delivery of our bespoke pieces, communication and attention to detail has been flawless. We look forward to utilising the signage over coming months and years. Thank you, Clive!”

A huge thank you to John, Gary, Michelle, David, Nathan, and the entire Island team. We hope to see you again soon!
