Overview

The Royal Automobile Club operates one of the United Kingdom’s most prestigious private members’ golf courses.

Situated at its Woodcote Park estate in Surrey, the Club spans over approximately 350 acres, amidst the Epsom Downs, less than 20 miles from central London.

With a rich heritage, exceptional facilities and a commitment to excellence, the golf courses offer a premium experience for members and guests. In keeping with this high standard, the Club identified the need to work with a partner, who could provide a solution that best reflects its values of quality, exclusivity, and attention to detail.

The Challenge

The Club required signage that reflected the sophistication and exclusivity of its surroundings.

However, there were two key challenges to overcome:

A unique Club requires a bespoke solution. Ensuring the signage does not reflect a one-size-fits-all approach was essential to the decision in selecting a strategic partner.

The second challenge was finding products that were made from quality materials and stood the test of time. This meant surviving the all-weather conditions of the British climate and still looking good as new.

The Solution

To meet the unique requirements of the Royal Automobile Club, Signs4Golf, led by experienced craftsman Clive Briggs, provided a fully bespoke signage solution.

Clive worked closely with Rhys Beecher, Director of Golf at the Club, to understand both the visual and functional priorities of the estate.

Rhys, who has worked with Clive for many years, trusted his ability to translate complex requirements into elegant, made-to-measure designs. Unlike other suppliers, Clive offered a truly customised approach – nothing was too much to ask.

From tee markers and directional signs to custom-made starter boxes and storage solutions, Clive provided a consistent suite of handcrafted elements, each tailored to complement the character of the Royal Automobile Clubs needs . The finished products not only enhanced the look and feel of the course, but also stood up to the demands of daily use.

Rhys Beecher, Director of Golf at the Royal Automobile Club said:

“Working with Clive at Signs4Golf has always been a pleasure. His ability to create truly bespoke solutions, without compromising on quality, is exactly what a club like ours needs.

“The off-the-shelf approach simply wasn’t appropriate for the Royal Automobile Club. What I really value is that you can set Clive on a task and trust he’ll just get on with it and deliver exceptional results.

“It’s like having an on-hand master carpenter at the club – whether we need signage, trolley storage, tee boxes, or something entirely unique like a first tee starter box, there’s nothing he can’t produce. Everything he does enhances the aesthetic and atmosphere of the golf course.”

What did Signs4Golf provide?

Bespoke timber signage that is crafted using sustainably sourced hardwoods such as Iroko and Utile.

Painted signs were produced using Tricoya®, a durable, moisture-resistant MDF designed specifically for long-lasting outdoor use.

High-performance finishes – Advanced coatings were applied to ensure each sign remains weather-resistant, withstanding UV exposure, rain and seasonal shifts.

Strategic and Environmental Value

Sustainable Materials: All wood was responsibly sourced, and Tricoya® is designed to offer longevity with lower environmental impact.

Brand Consistency: From tee markers to directional signage, every element was designed to align with the Club’s visual identity and operational standards.

Conclusion

The collaboration between the Royal Automobile Club and Signs4Golf showcases how a bespoke, high-quality signage solution can significantly enhance both the aesthetic and practical elements of a prestigious club environment.
